Variable Beginning Readers: Book Level Description
EMERGENT readers: rely on patterned text to help them get the feeling of reading fluently; are learning to recognize a few letters and sight words; are learning how to match one word in the text for every word they say
BEGINNING readers: are using some sight words to read simple books fluently; are learning to decode easy words and quickly recognize some sight words
TRANSITIONAL readers: are reading more complex books; developing a large sight word bank and can use these words to read books with multiple lines of text fluently; more complex sentence structure with smaller font sized words
INDEPENDENT readers: recognize 100 or more sight words and can use the words to read a variety of books fluently with more diverse sentence structures
